Delighted that The Bay Tree, which sadly closed during the Covid pandemic in October 2021, has reopened. Under new management the pub appears to be thriving. It prides itself on serving food which only uses local ingredients and is already becoming a popular destination for good food, and local ales.

Il Paradiso on the Forest is just quarter of mile outside the village on the York road. It’s a genuine Italian family-run restaurant and pizzeria which is proving very popular with our visitors. One family enjoyed it so much recently, they went to dinner there three times during their stay. Rosie and I go whenever we can, which isn’t nearly as often as we’d like. The restaurant offers a great deal more than just pizza and pasta. Their seafood dishes are superb, as are the porchetta and steaks. There’s an excellent bar and a great selection of house cocktails. It’s a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike and suitable for children. Italians love children and are very family orientated, so expect to be seated along side large groups and there to be the occasional special occasion taking place whilst you are there. It can get a little noisy and is perhaps not the place to go for a quiet, intimate dinner. But the food and the service is superb and you will certainly be assured of a very warm, Italian welcome. Let the staff know that Ben and Rosie recommended them to you and you may even get extra special treatment!

Our favourite restaurant in York. If you love tapas food, this is one of the best. The chefs, waiters and waitresses are sent to Spain for training. We highly recommend this and it’s sister restaurant on Fossgate.

If you like real ale, this little micro-brewery on Bridge Street in Helmsley, is not to be missed. In the summer, you can sit in the tiny rear garden and sample a range of beers. A great place to pause and reset or meet the locals and chat and relax.

Easingwold is a pretty Georgian market town just 6 miles from Sutton-on-the-Forest. The market is every Friday and there are plenty of good places to eat and drink including The George, an 18th century coaching inn set in the heart of the cobbled square, and The Olive Branch, an excellent café and bistro (which offers vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free meals as well)
