Sightseeing, Biking and Hiking

These suggestions offer multiple options of activity level, from relatively passive (car ride, some walking) to strenuous (steep climbs, long distances) stroll a block or miles. All are beautiful and interesting.
Bear Mountain State Park has so much to offer! The Inn and restaurants are worth a visit even if you’re not staying or eating there. The outdoor ice rink with mountain and river views is unparalleled. The carousel is beautiful! Fun to ride even as an adult ;) . Hiking trails galore. True hikes up the mountain or an easy walk around Hessian lake right next door to the inn. Boating in season . Picnicking with grills and tables. Swimming pool in the woods. Trailside Museum and Zoo, including bear and other indigenous wildlife (Note: all animals at the zoo are rescues that for health reasons were unable to be released into the wild). There is so much history and beauty here that I cannot do it justice. Do a little research and plan a trip!

Technically part of Bear Mt. this treasure is a park unto itself. The views are amazing even if the tower is closed when you’re there. But climbing the tower adds a whole new dimension to the experience. The interior walls are tiled with pictures and text telling the history of the tower and surrounding park. There are hiking trails and picnic spots in the woods. Even the drive up to the tower is worth the visit!

Sightseeing

I confess my only visits to West Point were as a kid, we used to go for fireworks accompanied by the band. Left a dramatic memory! That said, people traveling from around the world make a point to visit this historic site. It is open for tours but make arrangements in advance and check again the week of your visit to make sure nothing has changed. Note: All visitors age 16 and older signing up to take a bus tour of West Point must provide valid photo identification such as; a current valid driver's license or passport, or U.S. school ID (must be school-age). Each individual, age 16 and older, must present their own form of identification. No tour guide may bring in ID bundles for the group. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The ski slopes are open to the public and have a separate entrance but are part of the academy.
