Whitney Plantation is the only plantation museum in Louisiana with an exclusive focus on the lives of enslaved people. Visit Whitney’s memorials and restored buildings to enter the world of a Louisiana sugar plantation and to remember those who built and worked this property. On your walking tour, your guide shows you through slave cabins, a freedmen’s church, detached kitchen and outbuildings, a 1790s owner’s house and memorials built to honor the enslaved.

One of the only plantations in the country committed to educating visitors about the lives of slaves, this museum and tour is a must for anyone wanting to take an honest look at Louisiana history. Make a reservation ahead of time. Ask for Shaq's tour availability! Stop at Connie's Grill for a heavy, locally-loved lunch. Call to make sure they're open.

Within the boundaries of the “Habitation Haydel”, as the Whitney Plantation was originally known, the story of the Haydel family of German immigrants and the slaves that they held were intertwined. In 2014, the Whitney Plantation opened its doors to the public for the first time in its 262 year history as the only plantation museum in Louisiana with a focus on slavery. Museum exhibits, memorial artwork and restored buildings and hundreds of first-person slave narratives.
