Pigeon Forge gets its name from an iron forge built near the Little Pigeon River around 1820. (Which is near the delicious Old Mill restaurant that you should definitely make a stop at.) However, there’s a neat little quirk behind the name: the river after which it is named was known for having a vast number of passenger pigeons (now extinct) that frequently traveled through the valley. Unsurprisingly, the congregation of birds led locals to name the river after them. The Old Mill itself predates the forge by around 30 years and has been maintained ever since. If you’re into pioneer history it is a must-see. And speaking of history, in 1940 Franklin D. Roosevelt rode through Pigeon Forge to dedicate the new Smoky Mountain National Park. One of the most famous people to come from Sevier County is Dolly Parton, and in Pigeon Forge you will find the Dollywood amusement and waterpark, which is partly owned by the singer. Dollywood definitely has something for everyone and has been consistently praised as being very family-oriented and friendly.

Just located right over the mountain from Cherokee. Only an hour drive through The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
