The famous Kaiadas cave is the place where the Spartans (according to Pavsanias, Thucydides and Strabo) were throwing their captured enemies and convicts, until 406BC. The geological as well as the anthropolological reports of the aforementioned specialists, in relation to the historical and the literary evidence lead us to the tentative conclusion that the pit hole of Trypi is actually the Kaiadas of antiquity, used by the Spartans mainly during the period of the Messenian wars (8th-5th centuries BC) to hurl down into it the Messenian captives as weII as criminals sentenced to death , the sacrilegious and traitors to the country.

Next to the village of Tripti about 10 kilometres from Sparta lies the gorge and cave of Kaiadas, used at some point in the war of independence a couple of hundred years ago, but now gaining significance as a landmark in this area.
