The Monastery of 40 Saints sits on a hill overlooking the town of Saranda. The monastery was first built during the 6th century AD and was likely an important pilgrimage site in the region for at least one millennium. During the 14th and 15th centuries it suffered destruction due to the Ottoman conquest in the region. After renewed attention in the 18th and 19th centuries it once again was abandoned and fell into ruins. As late as the 1930s the high walls were still standing, but during World War II it fell into further destruction and shattered ruins. After the war it was demolished even more and was later used as a military base until the Albanian Civil War in 1997. It’s a short drive from the center of Saranda if you want to travel by car, but you can also walk-up hill following a mostly paved road.

The ruins of the Monastery of 40 Saints are located on the hill east of Saranda, close to Lekursi Castle. The monastery was built during the 6th century and the Monastery walls have mural paintings of byzantine disciples and one of the paintings is thought to be one of the oldest byzantine wall paintings in Albania. The Monastery was kept in good conditions until the 1944 when it was bombed by the British soldiers. The name of the monastery; (where Saranda got her name from) Agioi Saranta in Greek meaning Forty Saints.
