A regatta is a competition where there are one or more races of either traditional rowed or sailed boats (known locally as pirogue), it is a colourful ballet of boats for the eyes. There may be different categories, depending on the size of the boats. Each boat (pirogue) comprises of a team for the competition. These competitions dates back to 1874. Head to the Mahebourg Waterfront for excellent fruit pickles (confits) and fresh coconuts from the street stall. Also try the "merveille", sort of a Mauritan version of the papadum. Eat with tamarind sauce or chilli/ coriander sauce.
Visit the Mahebourg market on Mondays, and walk around the old town of Mauritius.
