This soviet high-rise was built at the end of Stalin's life. Yes, like Warsaw, Latvia also got one of these "Stalin birthday cakes." This building is the pinnacle of socialist realism expressed in architecture; the building is meant to represent the stages of development to communism. Each step in the building symbolizes developmental stages, such as feudalism and socialism, until you reach the shining red star (a symbol for communism.) With independence, we Latvians quickly removed the star. P.S. there is a viewing platform at the top!

Смотровая площадка на здании Латвийской академии наук расположена на высоте 65 метров. Город отсюда виден как на ладони – с площадки открывается захватывающий дух вид на Старую Ригу и Даугаву. Смотровая площадка Латвийской академии наук работает каждый день. Билеты стоят 5 евро, и приобрести их можно у дежурной. Чтобы посетить смотровую площадку, на лифте нужно подняться до 15-го этажа, а затем еще два этажа пройти пешком, следуя указателям. Время пребывания на смотровой площадке не ограничено. Сверху прекрасно виден Центральный рынок, расположенное на другом берегу Даугавы здание Латвийской национальной библиотеки, шпили церквей Вецриги, телебашня на Закюсале и снующие по Даугаве кораблики.
