Slaves and free blacks gathered here on Sundays for dancing and drumming, the rhythms and variations of which are an integral part of early jazz, brass band music, second lines and parade beats. The Congo Square Preservation Society convenes on Sundays from 3-5 pm to continue the tradition.

Congo Square is an open space, now within Louis Armstrong Park, which is located in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, just across Rampart Street north of the French Quarter. The Tremé neighborhood is famous for its history of African American music.
