A climb to the top of the 110 meters from the National Shrine of Cristo Rei is something unique and touching. It is very beautiful to see Lisbon from above, with wonderful views of the April 25 Bridge, Tejo River and of the city in a whole new perspective. In 1936, it was built this monument inspired by the statue of Cristo Redentor existing in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Inspiring for some, symbol of the dictatorship and of obscurantism for others, the monument to Christ leaves no one indifferent. It was inaugurated across the Tagus in 1959, as a way for the Portuguese episcopate to thank God for having spared Lisbon from World War II. The 28 meter-high (90ft) image of Christ stands on a 75 meter-tall pedestal (246ft), and an elevator takes visitors up to the feet of the statue, with the 25 de Abril Bridge standing right below. From the statue or from the terrace across the monument there's a beautiful panoramic view of practically the entire city of Lisbon. To get there you have to take the commuter ferry that departs from Cais do Sodré station to Cacilhas (an 8-minute ride), from where bus 101 departs to the entrance of the monument.

Cristo Rei is by nature one of best viewpoints over Lisbon, even though it was constructed under religious purposes and inspired by Rio de Janeiro's very own Christ the Redeemer.

Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon in the central part of Portugal. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
