Bloody good burgers! This could possibly be the best I've ever had. And for a very reasonable price too. For that price, this quality? It's amazing. The bread and the party is very good (and self made!), actually the bread is one of the best I've ever had. The sauce was delicious, and the burger quite big. I'll go here ever day until the end of my stay. https://www.facebook.com/bbzagreb/

Pizzeria with couple dough choices. Located in lively urban surrounding, it would be convenient lunch/dinner combined with a visit to Bundek lake or Museum of modern art. Very comfortable and charming, staff is friendly and pizzas are excellent (as seen on the menu, they offer just pizzas) Italian style, thin dough, perfectly balanced topping, not too saucy. Nice place, great service, fine German beer, tasty pizza! https://www.facebook.com/nupizzeria/

If you have been to Zagreb before, you probably noticed that there aren’t many places to eat snacks after 01:00. That is definitely one of the city’s biggest disadvantages and a complaint of many, whether they are locals or travelers. Pingvin defies that thought, particularly because it is open non stop. Situated in the Center, this fast food is easily accessible and its snacks are exactly what you would crave, especially after a night out clubbing. The polite staff serves many different sandwiches (also suitable for vegetarians), hamburgers, cheeseburgers, salads, toasts and refreshments. https://goo.gl/maps/cjuE8b4fo122

Situated in the city’s Center, this café can be found tucked away from the streets, in a peaceful area surrounded by old buildings. Visitors can enjoy its relaxing and homey interior as well as its creatively decorated terrace, packed during warmer months. Cafe is well known for serving different types of Ethiopian, fair trade coffee, tasty varieties of tea and lots of brands of beer (including Erdinger, Fischer’s and O’Hara stout on draught). The coffee is excellently prepared and the service is really good. The owners hang there pretty often, talking to their customers and helping them decide what to drink. https://goo.gl/maps/GHBRLirWzp12 https://www.facebook.com/cafeudvoristu

It’s a hidden gem, far from beaten tourist paths, nothing like restaurants near well known Zagreb’s sights. Located in the northern part of town called Ksaver, surrounded by trees and houses, it’s a great place for locals to chill on weekends. There is nothing pretentious or pompus in here. The staff is relaxed, friendly, always helpful and with a big smile on their face. Massive wooden benches and tables, as well as a fireplace really contribute to that feeling of a traditional and relaxed place. https://goo.gl/maps/oPNdomUnPcr http://www.mlinarica.hr/index_en.html

Stepping into cozy courtyard which hides a colorful cafe bar and cake-shop Jutro (Morning) is a well-deserved break from the city life. It's a lovely decorated bar that comes with attributes of non-smoking, pet-friendly, kids-friendly (having a kids corner) and art-loving (for it serves as a little gallery and art souvenirs-shop, too). Jutro is a wonderfully designed cafe bar offering yummy cakes. It's a perfect place to have a cup of tea or coffee....or even a of glass rakija, if you're more of an alcohol fan. Magical summer evenings sometimes turn this courtyard into a live music stage. https://goo.gl/maps/J1F5CLNF9Hy https://www.facebook.com/JUTRO-414873465250494/

That only witch which remains is Bistro Vještica (The Witch Bistro), opened for those who want to discover old delicious recipes and the food that was once served on the tables of nobles, witches and citizens of Zagreb. Because all of that and a nostalgic feeling for the old Zagreb dishes, the owners were encouraged to open this place that serves the amazing ones! And to make their old Zagreb dishes more acceptable for the youths, they´ve given them a more modern attire! This lovely Zagreb’s story is accompanied with a pleasant and unpretentious interior! The red color dominates in the bistro and its combination with wood provides a warm atmosphere in this little bistro that has only 20seat

On the inn menu you will find some great traditional Croatian dishes at the affordable prices! So here are some of them you definitely need to taste…Begin with a cottage cheese with sour cream or try „Štrukli“ which is the traditional dish from the Zagorje region. From the main course dishes you should definitely try the stuffed peppers, a dish that´s called „Sarma“, or a stew made from tripes and bacon! At the end enjoy in the various pancakes! In this inn you´ll certainly not get carefully decorated dishes because here is all about the taste! Firstly it is the place where you can come for a cup of great coffee and secondly it is one of three or four places in the city where you can drink quality coffee prepared by the highest standards. When I talk about coffee, I do it from two perspectives – coffee and coffee machine. At 42 Coffee Co. Coffee is absolutely fantastic. It is Arabica blend which they serve in cooperation with Cogito Coffee, one of the few Croatian coffee roasters. https://www.facebook.com/42coffeeco/ https://goo.gl/maps/Si5xKLb7HMG2

Bistro Apetit offers superb standards of food, wine and service. One key to its success is the location, hidden in a hedged garden on a tranquil residential street, just a short walk north of the city's Gradec old quarter. The cooking mixes the best of Croatian/Adriatic cuisine with the contemporary European mainstream, chef's, Goran Kočiš, recepies. At 70kn-90kn for a starter and 120kn-160kn for a main, Bistro Apetit is by no means beyond the average pocket, and there are always some truly outstanding dishes on the seasonally-changing menu. A new crop of quality burger bars sprang up in recent years and this was one of the first, serving deftly grilled patties of pure beef to an appreciative crowd. The cheddar bacon supreme (35kn) is the ruling monarch of the menu, although the pulled-pork sandwich (33kn) also has its devotees. There’s a breakfast option (bacon, eggs and pancakes) available up until 2pm; bottled Belgian beers, Strongbow cider and locally brewed Nova Runda craft beer provide ample excuses to hang around. Korčula is as traditional as it gets. This fish restaurant was here long before the trendy bars set up around it. The kitchen turns out high-quality versions of seafood standards, tuna fillets or grilled squid with blitva, as well as a few specialities worth trying, in particular a succulent baked octopus with potatoes (120kn). There are scallops, breaded frogs' legs and grouper or John Dory priced by the kilo. The black risotto (crni rižot) is as good as you'll get anywhere in town. Decent, well priced bottled of Dingač and Pošip (180kn) highlight an excellent wine selection (literally dozens of reds and whites) of similarly Dalmatian provenance. http://www.restoran-korcula.hr/

Bistro 75 is still finding its way in Zagreb’s ever busier bistro/snack scene. A prime location helps, in the heart of the city’s bar quarter and not two minutes’ walk from the main square. At Bistro 75, food is at its best at lunchtimes, when locals tuck into the signature pulled-pork sandwiches, complemented by fat chips drizzled with zingy barbecue sauce. If this sounds like a diet-busting recipe for a sleepy afternoon, there are salads and three different types of falafel, with soups and stews offered in winter - fresh-fruit juices or craft beers may accompany. The place tends to throng on warm evenings, when punters are drawn in by its terrace. http://www.bistro75.hr/

The first sushi restaurant in Croatia, Takenoko is still one of the very few Asian restaurants in town worth experimenting with – and although it will set you back a wad of kunas it is usually well worth it. A swirl of mellow mood music mixed with the soft sound of chefs chopping behind a central cooking station. Leafy plants sit in tall vases around heavy wooden tables below track lighting. Try the Tokyo platter: 11 nori makis (tuna and salmon) and seven nigiris. There’s a handsome choice of wok-fried dishes and some truly inventive exercises in east-west fusion, with fish, chicken and veal dressed in exotic spice combinations. http://www.takenoko.hr/en/

Opened in 2010 by former staff of the legendary Okrugljak, Carpaccio delivers stylish Italian-themed dining in a wonderfully convenient bang-in-the centre location. For starters, there's a generous list of carpaccios, with marinated Adriatic fish or salmon among the most succulent choices. There are plenty of vegetarian options among the risottos and pastas, and substantial steaks and veal cutlets among the meaty mains. Leave room for dessert: the house semifreddo and tiramisu are difficult to choose between. Chic black furnishings, reproduction Art Nouveau posters, and a soundtrack of Italian pop provide the backdrop. http://ristorantecarpaccio.hr/en/

Ivek i Marek Inspired by fairy-tale characters, Ivek i Marek is made up of two similarly named businesses alongside each other on Tkalčićeva; one is a pâtisserie that uses all-natural ingredients, the other is a restaurant. The rustic feel of the sit-down eaterie is reflected in the menu, which is inspired by the age-old cuisine of (mainly) Zagorje and Istria that bring local suppliers to the forefront. Outstanding desserts are produced next door. Given the quality and central location, prices are more than fair. http://www.ivek-i-marek.hr/

Kod Mike keeps its promise of delivering “dishes the way our grandmothers cooked.” Its traditional façade blends in with the fairy-tale atmosphere of Tkalčićeva, and the daily specials run at less than 30 kuna—that’s a full cooked meal for the price of a simple sandwich elsewhere. The interior keeps the spirit of old Zagreb alive, but you’ll want a spot on the terrace to watch the people on the city’s most revered street go about their daily business. http://kodmike.com/

Diagonally opposite Zagreb Cathedral, Capuciner is one of those classic spots that should be far more expensive than it is. Having sadly abandoned domestic cuisine for pizzas and pastas, this long-established eaterie can feed a family of four for 200 kuna, unless you start laying into the turkey or fish mains. Considering its location, it’s still a godsend and provides a pleasant covered side terrace to rest your feet after a hard morning of sightseeing. http://www.capuciner.hr/en/index.php

Down near the city’s new business quarter, the former workaday grill and diner Bistro-Grill Deno has upped the ante and given the place a new look. Although now furnished in a contemporary fashion, they still offer wonderfully cheap meals. The quality of the dishes was never in question, but only now does the carnivorous business crowd tuck into the 35-kuna lunchtime specials. Deno is also open for dinner every day except Sunday. http://www.bistro-deno.hr/o-nama.php

Consisting of a single large table indoors and a couple of benches outdoors, Umami is a quality Asian-themed fast food outlet where you can just about eat sitting down if you ask your neighbour to budge up a bit. The regular menu usually features a curry dish, a wok dish, a Japanese dish, a Thai dish, a salad dish and a soup dish – and with hardly anything breaking the 40Kn barrier, it’s an inexpensive and satisfying way of acquiring your daily fix of spicy global food. It’s certainly a godsend in the busy Tkalčićeva area, where a speedy post-sightseeing, pre-drinking feed is very often just what the visitor needs. https://www.facebook.com/umami.restoran

Located in a former pharmaceuticals factory tucked behind the Westin hotel, Medika is basically an anarchists’ squat that was granted official status by a city administration eager to pucker up to Zagreb’s alternative community. A regular menu of punk, ska and jazz gigs plus raucous DJ-driven club nights attract a healthy cross-section of hedonistically-inclined youth - so you don’t need either dreadlocks or a dog on a rope to fit in. Check out their website to see what's going on. https://goo.gl/maps/r8nLrdhWTrw http://attack.hr/?lang=en

The owners of The Treehouse caffe have found their inspiration from the passion for the nature, and feelings of autonomy and freedom – actually in everything that offers a real treehouse! Therefore they decided to open a grounded version of such a house in a bustling center of Zagreb. In The Treehouse caffe there is always domestic, relaxed and a friendly atmosphere … so it´s the perfect place to get away from everyday city rush! The interior of the caffe is arranged in a way that fits to its owners vision and blended with lots of detail. https://goo.gl/maps/Z6BHwaUFLYE2 https://www.facebook.com/TheTreehouseCaffe/ http://citypal.me/listing/the-treehouse-caffe/ https://youtu.be/tFSuusa4zO

Pub. An early adopter of American-style craft beers, as well as cask ale imports and local Croatian favourites, Tolkein's House has been on the progressive beer and ale trail for years now. It's name would suggests a full on fantasy theme, but could disappoint Tolkein geeks hoping for a quirky bar-cum-attraction. This isn't really a hobbit-house but a local's pub, with a few Tolkein-themed knick-knacks adorning the walls. It's a lively place, especially during weekends, head there early to guarantee a table. https://goo.gl/maps/Z6BHwaUFLYE2

It's funny how this underground club is situated in a hilly elite residential area. First things first – this ain’t no fancy lounge bar or a cozy bean-bag chair club, you need to have some balls when going here. When a couple of alternative hotspots around the city closed, Krivi put (Wrong Way) filled the much needed space by becoming the starting point (god forbid the ending point, since it closes at 02:00) for people that love and know how to party. The most important is that the drinks are cheap, the music good and loud and the crowd filled with positive energy. By coming on Thursdays or Saturdays you can sometimes get lucky and see a concert. https://goo.gl/maps/nuL9YXYwwMw https://www.facebook.com/pages/Krivi-Put/134656319955740

Culture Factory, with its new rearrangement, has become technical and production-based best equipped club in Croatia, and, in the opinion of professionals, the club with the best quality of sound because of its isolation and trapezoidal hall. The new equipment (sound system and lightning) has been handpicked to meet most band "riders" of every major band for this type of club. So far we have hosted: Pixies, Dinosaur JR, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fleet Foxes, Slayer, Down, Public Image Limited, Joe Satriani, Patti Smith.. https://goo.gl/maps/X1z9ySP1uCu http://www.tvornicakulture.com/tvornica-kulture-info_eng.html

Zagreb Jazz bar .The place will welcome you with its simplicity and the first thing you’ll notice are big posters presenting jazz musicians. But the true value of this café, that makes it different and more special than the others, is its awesome terrace – a flower garden that can become your peaceful oasis in a city center. The beautiful garden is great hideaway when you want to run from a city rush, especially in spring and summer when days are longer and the temperatures higher. Caffe Tin often organizes live concerts (on Thursdays), so if you wish to spice up the evening with some jazz music, this is the right place. https://www.facebook.com/caffebartin/

THE place for beer lovers! Well, to be honest you don’t have to be one to have a great time here. Craft Room is a pub in the vicinity of the main square with so much firepower (around 200 types of beer, 80% of which from small manufacturers in Croatia) that at first I was discouraged to even order a beer here. Their selection is constantly improving and new beers keep coming. In my opinion this is a perfect place to spend an evening, experimenting with different flavors, colors, smells and the pleasures of beer. Some people even say there is a lot to learn about the culture from the beer they make. This place is certainly the right spot for activities like that. https://www.facebook.com/craf

Situated in a small shack behind the national library, it’s a small and cozy place for all rockers and rollers to enjoy. Thursdays is usually “Country night”, Fridays “Friday fever”, “Rock Saturday” and the melancholic blues Sunday. Bands are different every week in a very cozy and laid back atmosphere, you just might stumble upon a TV host of a scientific show playing away with his rock’n’roll band or you’ll be able to choose your own track on the jukebox. This is definitely one of the more “underground” places in Zagreb, so if you’re looking for off the beaten track, this is definitely it. https://www.facebook.com/Route-66-Zagreb-118631904860851/ 09:00 - 01:00 Coffee: Kn 4.00

Take me home project was started by the idea to gather Croatian product designers and their excellent products in one place. We wanted to offer high quality, locally produced or hand made products as an alternative to mass produced, imported products dominating our market. We offer Croatian design to both local and foreign customers and promote it as the best Croatian souvenir. We particularly value products manufactured by old crafts’ techniques because of the fusion of contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship, and stimulation of local production and preservation of old crafts. http://www.takemehome.hr/en/

Vintage second hand shop. Its offers include women’s and men’s collection, although the first one prevails. You can choose between a fair amount of dresses, knits, leathers, blouses, winter coats, jeans, and shirts. Bags, shoes and other accessories are also part of their assortment. When it comes to prices, it is always the same story – you can buy something for a silly amount of money (Kn 20, for example), but then again, some vintage clothes are certainly not cheap. However, considering the quality of the products, they are not that high. https://www.facebook.com/UlicniOrmar

Comic book shop Asteroid B612 indeed serves as a sort of a dreamy retreat. It even seems as a kind of of a hiding place, as it is situated in basement of an old building with a beautiful entryway, right next to a sex shop. Tobacco-free place. One of my favorite places in Zagreb is definitely Booksa. Booksa is a book club, but you don’t have to be a member to enjoy everything this place offers (only, if you come there more than once, it’s advisable to sign up for their membership card). The catchy name comes from a slang – in Croatian “buksa” means prison. So, if you are “prisoner” of your love for literature you will feel like home here. The atmosphere is very “homey” indeed – ordering drinks is a sort of self-service thing and after you sit back and relax on one of the cozy sofas you can feel free to take a look at various newspapers and literature magazines, even in foreign languages. http://www.booksa.hr/ar

I think a visit to the Museum of Broken Relationships is a must not only for reading cute, weird and heartbreaking stories, but also for its therapeutic effect! Seeing all these break-up stories motivated me to not make the same mistakes; so if you are in a relationship and have some difficulties, but not enough money to see a therapist, come here – it’s cheaper. This place has a lot of material to read so don’t forget to bring your reading glasses and don’t worry if you’re not the reading type: every one of these stories has its own charm, and what I like here the most is the raw, honest and personal stories willingly shared with others... https://goo.gl/maps/kFMz1z4cpDS2

The works of mainly self-taught artists and sculptors, who produced wonderful pieces of personal and professional style without any formal training, are exhibited in Zagreb’s Croatian Museum Of Naïve Art. Paintings, drawings and colorful sculptures, mainly by artists from Croatia and its surrounding region and dating from the 1930s to the 1970s, are sure to capture the attention of untrained viewers and art experts alike. Franjo Mraz, Sofija Natetilic have exhibited here. Furthermore, some of the most striking exhibits are Emerik Feješ’s vibrant city monuments; Ivan Generalić’s rural landscapes; and Ivan Rabuzin’s heavenly paintings containing visions of eternal spring. http://www.hmnu.hr/en

Graffiti-wall !!! This was the first organized Zagreb street art project of the new millennium. But the painted history of this wall is even longer. It dates back to 1987 when young artists were gathered to paint the wall and thus welcome the international university games. Museum of Street Art... The idea to revitalize and transform different parts of the city of Zagreb led a group of well-known Croatian artists to supervise the Museum of Street Art, or MUU. The repainting, refurbishment of empty walls, as well as artistic intervention in older parts of the city followed on from this. Starting with the renovation of the ulica Branimirova, the street connecting the main bus and train stations, the ‘museum’ has since continued revamping with three more projects in the neglected areas of Siget and Dugave, as well as the interior of the abandoned military hospital in Vlaska 87. The result is a fantastic mix of painting, spray-can culture.

Ivan Meštrović was a Croatian sculptor and architect (1883-1962) who produced a great body of work which is today housed in a gallery under his name. The 17th century converted building in Zagreb’s Upper Town, made up of three adjoining buildings, was once the artist’s main residence and studio. More than 300 sculptures, drawings and other artwork, including furniture designed by Meštrović, are exhibited in the beautiful former residence, which he donated to the state before his move to the United States in the late 1960s. Visitors will enjoy a variety of themes, mainly portraits, female nudes and mythological themes and figures

If you happen to stay in Zagreb during Sunday, you should definitely visit the Antique and collectibles fair on British square. It is one of the Zagreb’s vivid symbols, always busy and full of people in search for a nice antique or a thoughtful present with a peculiar charm. On rather sleepy Zagreb Sundays visiting this fair is a good way to experience a lively local gathering. Although the fair works until 14:00 hours, the best time for a visit is in the morning or around noon. After you look for some interesting and unique souvenirs, having a cup of coffee in the area of the Square is essential. https://www.facebook.com/britanskitrg/?rf=126140900798035

The modest Canvas Gallery in the peaceful street full of various different content, Tomašićeva, is the perfect address for those who wish to buy exquisite art pieces by domestic authors, mainly contemporary and classical painters. The pleasantly illuminated interiror of the Canvas Gallery is full of pictures from its bottom to its top; while its permanant selling exhibition can always be seen, the space also serves as a temporary exhibition space, but not only for paintings, but also of photographs, statues… It is a gallery with a subtle, but quality program, which everyone should investigate themselves and return to every so often.
