The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on the surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies over the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is one of the most complete cultural green spaces across the country and its operation is centred around the Education-Culture- Sustainability triptych.
Its premises of 210,000 sq.m. house the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera and the Stavros Niarchos Park. The entire project design was led by the architectural Renzo Piano Building Workshop of the renowned architect Renzo Piano, and it was created to be a multifunctional place of education, culture and entertainment
