Margate Beach is protected from curious predators by shark nets, and the Indian Ocean waters are warm. So, this is an ideal swimming, surfing, body-boarding, and stand-up paddling beach. There are also a number of spots at which to enjoy snorkelling for visitors that want to see the marine life up close. So, bring your flippers, goggles and snorkels along for a few fun hours under the water’s surface. Lifeguards are on duty during the peak times and seasons to keep swimmers and visitors safe. A high-factor sunscreen is a must when spending time on any of South Africa’s beaches. Families love Margate Beach for the safe swimming conditions. There is a tidal pool, where the children enjoy playing because it is calm and relatively shallow. More than this, the wide sandy beach is fabulous for sunbathing, building sandcastles, running, walking, and playing an endless variety of beach games. There is a paved footpath that runs for a kilometres along the beach. The whale deck is just perfect for the show that southern rights and humpbacks put on every year when they pass here (usually between July and December). Margate has plenty of fabulous eateries and shops, which are on the doorstep of the beach. So, after a morning spent on the warm sands or splashing in the waves, head to the town and enjoy some sweet indulgences or hearty meals with friends and family. Margate is only about 90 minutes from Durban, 25 minutes from Port Edward, and 20 minutes from Port Shepstone.
