City/town information

The history of Alnwick (Old English meaning 'dairy farm, settlement') dates back to the 7th century, but the town really began to develop after Alnwick Castle was built on a manmade motte overlooking the river. The town was subject to frequent raids by the Scots, and as a result, it was granted the right to enclose the entire town within a high wall. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England, second only to Windsor Castle. It is the residence of the current Duke of Northumberland, where it has been home to the Percy Family for over 700 years. The castle and grounds are open to the public and it attacts over 800,000 visitors per year. Alnwick Castle is probably most famous for it's use as a filming location for films and TV shows (most notably the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey). Alnwick Abbey was founded by the Premonstratensian Order in 1147 on a site on the north bank of the River Aln just to the north-west of the town. It was suppressed in 1539. All that remains today is an imposing gatehouse, standing within Hulne Park, part of the estates of the Duke of Northumberland. The town centre, with its twisting cobbled streets, offers an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants and pubs all steeped in history. Whether it’s rifling through the shelves of Barter Books (one of the UK’s largest second hand bookshops housed in the town’s old railway station), catching a performance at Alnwick Playhouse, toe-tapping to live music in a lively local Inn or exploring the Bailiffgate Museum which bring to life the people and places of Northumberland, there’s always something to do in Alnwick. One thing is for sure...a magical time awaits you in this spellbinding town.
