Informazioni sulla città/località

Piazza Sant’Oronzo : You are in the heart of Lecce, one of the most elegant parts of the city, where different architectural styles live together in perfect harmony. From the Roman Amphitheatre, to the Column of St. Oronzo, brought here in honour of the saint and was first marked the end of the via Appia in Brindisi. The Sedile, which mixes the Gothic pointed arches with the renaissance loggia, palaces of the 1920’s and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the classical style. Piazza Duomo : You arrive here along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, walking through small piazzas and splendid richly decorated palaces. Spectacular by day and breathtaking by night, thanks to the light effects. At the entrance of the square there are large balconies with statues of Saints above. In front is the rich entrance to the Duomo Maria SS. Assunta church, the Vescovado with its grand balcony, the Palazzo del Seminario, designed by Giuseppe Cino at the end of 1600’s. In the courtyard there is a well, surmounted by the St. Irene statue and decorated with branches of acanthus. In the halls of the Seminario, visit the Museo Diocesano with paintings ranging from the end of 1400 to the end of 1700 and sculptures, silver and vestments. The Campanile made by Zimbalo dominates the city at 72 meters. Historical Museum of the city of Lecce : At short distance between piazza S. Oronzo and the Cathedral, along the nightlife track, is MUST, the new 3000 sq meters museum complex inside the former Monastery of Santa Chiara. Striking interior spaces, with spectacular views of the Roman Theatre. Visit the three sections devoted to different historical periods, from Messapi until present day, telling the history and transformation of the city. A place for modern artists to present contemporary exhibitions. SANTA CROCE : It’s praised for its Baroque excellence and former Convento dei Celestini, now home for the government of the Province. You can easily reach it from Piazza Sant’Oronzo, passing by via dei Templari. Expect to be speechless for the opulence and richness of detail in the façade: flowers, fruits, mythological figures, garlands, cornucopias and men alternating with zoomorphic figures. An impressive masterpiece taking more than 300 years of construction, three architects, hundreds of symbols, three doors, a large balcony with 13 cherubs and a rose with three rings inside. Inside, it’s sober in style, based on a Greek cross shape . The Papier Mâché Museum : Around the streets of the city centre, you’ll run into shops with masters working with papier mâché. The ancient art is kept alive thanks to the renewed tradition and proposals of contemporary local artists. Water, straw, plaster, glue, wire and sheets of recycled paper are all you need to create true works of art. To learn more, visit the small Museo della Cartapesta inside the Castello Carlo V. There are three sections with over 100 works by major artists from Lecce such as Caretta, Capoccia, Guacci, Errico, Pantaleo, Mazzeo, Indino, Malecore, Gallucci, togheter with some other contemporary and international artists such as the brazilian Lucia Barata.

ancient Messapic city

An ancient Messapic city surrounded by impressive megalithic walls, which can be observed in the Parco Archeologico, one of the largest in Italy piazza Scegnu. Go down to the Fonte Pliniano, the place where Plinio il Vecchio named in his “Historia Naturalis” opera. It’s a huge natural cave where the water flows and the level remains constant, through the principle of communicating vessels. Then take a stroll downtown, between baroque palaces, liberty and neoclassical, up to the Chiesa Matrice SS. Trinità, the Madonna del Rosario and the Jewish ghetto of 1600’s. Finally, visit the museum of wine - Museo della civiltà del Primitivo - with interesting objects from the 19th – 20th centuries, set in old cisterns
