Neighborhoods
We highly recommend visiting the Old Point Neighborhood downtown. The neighborhood is home to some of Beaufort's largest, oldest, and most expensive homes. Located between Carteret Street and the Beaufort River, this portion of downtown does not follow the major street grid and was once an area where a timber mill operated. Homes in this area range from the impressive mansions that overlook the Beaufort river to Victorian and Queen Anne style homes along Craven Street. Impressive live oaks line the streets. Carriage tours will take you through the neighborhood, walking is enjoyable as well.

Home to several species of birds, including herons, hawks, eagles, owls, falcons, geese, ducks, and other migratory waterfowl.If you like birdwatching, this is the place to go! In addition to birds, regular visitors among the cypress trees are alligators, turtles, and snakes. Local eateries can be found next to the swamp as well in historic Port Royal.

The Lighthouse is the only one in the state that is publicly accessible offering beautiful views of the coastline.

Hunting Island is a 5,000-acre secluded semitropical barrier island located 15 miles east of Beaufort, between Harbor Island and Fripp Island. The island is a state park and offers hiking / bike trail, marsh boardwalk, lagoon for kayaking.
The Lighthouse is the only one in the state that is publicly accessible offering beautiful views of the coastline.

The Spanish Moss Trail ‒ The Lowcountry’s Rails to Trail ‒ is a 10-mile greenway located in Northern Beaufort County, South Carolina that has become a “Must-Experience” activity for residents and visitors alike. The Trail is a 12-foot wide, paved path dedicated to those who want to walk, run, bike, fish, skate, scoot or stroll ‒ offering spectacular Lowcountry water and marsh views, coastal wildlife viewing, and historic points of interest as it meanders through Spanish moss-draped neighborhoods. Since 2012, five phases of the 10-Phase Master Plan have been completed and are open for public enjoyment, connecting the City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal. When the Trail is fully developed, it will be approximately 16 miles in length. Funding for the Spanish Moss Trail is made possible by public funding and private donations.

This 100-acre oak-hickory forested gem along the Okatie and Colleton Rivers was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and co-purchased by the County and State in 2004 to preserve the beauty of the forest as well as the historical remnants of a Yamasee village and Colonial-era cemetery.
Named for a Yamasee chief, the Preserve protects the main town of the Lower Yamasee. The Preserve's greatest attribute is its ability to provide archaeological data that has direct bearing on interpretation of the effects of European contact on Native Americans. Important questions regarding the effects of acculturation and migration upon late 17th and early 18th Century Native American life can be answered from data resting just beneath the ground.

Crystal Lake Park is 25-acres of forested habitats, salt marsh, and a man-made pond located on Lady's Island. The pond has a population of redfish and mullet, which get trapped during extreme high tides. Fishing in the pond is restricted to catch-and-release only due to the potential for unacceptably high cancer and non-cancer health risks. The full fish tissue analysis report can be downloaded by clicking here.
The Butler Marine building is open to the public Monday through Friday and the first Saturday of every month, from 9:00am to 2:00pm and has leased office space for the Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District. The conference room is available to the public for rental. Additionally, park volunteers installed, and maintain, a pollinator garden adjacent to the building!
