Upscale dining. The Gage takes its name from the architecturally significant Gage Group of buildings (18-24 South Michigan). Constructed in the late 1800s and now historically landmarked, the buildings housed three milliners, including Gage Brothers & Co. founded by David and George Gage. Gage Brothers & Co. supplied hats to fashionable women throughout the US and aboard. The art installation found in the staircase leading to the lower level features original early 20th century advertisements for Gage hats, which were known “superb style, sterling quality, and superior workmanship.” With a similar focus on sterling quality and superb style, The Gage has become a favorite of locals and visitors worldwide. Over the years, The Gage has been one of Chicago’s most booked restaurants-- effortlessly blending European influence with American style. The restaurant serves refined, rustic fare complemented by an innovative libations program in a lively, convivial setting. Recently celebrating over ten years in business, The Gage continues to be both a respected classic and an innovative leader on Chicago’s dining scene.

Bronzeville is a center of African-American life and culture in Chicago. Historically known as the city’s “Black Metropolis”, it’s home to a diverse business community, historic landmarks, and lively events like the annual Bud Billiken Parade that draws more than one million spectators each August. This community is known for it’s rich history and flourishing modern-day renaissance. Bronzeville’s cultural contributions are vast — it brought the world Pulitzer Prize-winner Gwendolyn Brooks, civil rights activist Ida B. Wells, legendary musician Louis Armstrong, and more. Today, the area is embracing its legacy as a mecca for civil rights, jazz, blues, and gospel music. You’ll find an array of coffee shops, bistros, galleries, libraries, monuments, and restaurants, alongside spectacular Victorian-era architecture and 19th-century mansions.

As the Chicago Architecture Center puts it, “Kenwood offers a surprising suburban feel in an urban setting.” As you wander its shady streets you’ll be awed by 19th-century mansions, charming coach houses, and stunning contemporary homes, all surrounded by lush lawns and meticulous garden landscapes that will leave you green with envy (and determined to go home and water your droopy fern). The neighborhood also boasts an impressive collection of Art Deco building from the early 20th century, particularly in the Indian Village district. That’s where you’ll find the Powhatan Apartments, an ornately decorated high-rise that was lauded as having “all the luxuries of an ocean liner” when it opened in 1929. There’s also the Hyde Park–Kenwood Historic District, recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.

It was the site of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, home to former President Barack Obama, an incubator for Nobel Prize winners — basically, history is made in Hyde Park. This culturally rich neighborhood is bookended by two of the city’s most significant institutions — the University of Chicago to the west and the Museum of Science and Industry to the east. The largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, the Museum of Science and Industry boasts more than 2,000 exhibits — from U-boats and airplanes to coal mines and tornados. It’s also housed in one of the last remaining buildings from the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, which was held in neighboring Jackson Park. And on the University of Chicago campus, you’ll find striking Gothic architecture, the free Smart Museum of Art, the Oriental Institute, the Court Theatre, and more. The university is known for world-changing discoveries, like the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor that was built below the school’s football stadium. The neighborhood’s cultural contributions don’t end there. It’s home to one of the most iconic masterpieces in American architectural design — Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the striking facade or take a tour of the meticulously restored interior. Also in Hyde Park, the DuSable Museum is the country’s first institution dedicated to African American history and culture. It resides within Washington Park, home to a bird and butterfly sanctuary and the much-photographed Fountain of Time. And the Hyde Park Art Center has been a powerhouse on the art scene for more than 70 years, claiming the title of oldest alternative exhibition space in Chicago.

The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge is the crown jewel of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood and is the best jazz club in the known universe. Green Mill is a place for people of all walks of life to relax, enjoy martinis or Schlitz, and listen to some of the best music around, from traditional jazz to swing orchestras. The Green Mill has attracted many celebrities through the years from Al Capone to Frank Sinatra to Bill Gates and has been filmed in The Untouchables, High Fidelity, and the 80s TV series, Crime Story. This is particularly impressive considering that Uptown has gone through an incredible transformation from its origins as a swamp to the "Hollywood of the Midwest" with Charlie Chaplin, to being run by Al Capone, to a haven for drug addicts and hoodlums, and finally to a neighborhood being reborn.

Located in the South Chicago neighborhood, Rainbow Beach totals 60.98 acres and features a gymnasium, fitness center and multipurpose rooms, handball courts, and one of the oldest community gardens in Chicago. A natural area located at the northeast end of the beach includes 9.18 acres of dune habitat. In 2013, the Park District is partnering with the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois at Chicago to install a prototype stormwater filter to clean the rainwater that washes off of the parking lot onto the beach. This project is funded by a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency. The Green Stormwater Filter is an inground permeable reactive filter system that reduces bacteriological, algal, and chemical contamination caused by stormwater runoff from Rainbow Beach parking lot. Major benefits of this project include: reducing the number of pollution sources impacting Rainbow Beach, reducing beach water contamination and consequent swim advisories, reducing algal blooms and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus at Rainbow Beach area, and serving as pilot project for urban stormwater management for other Great Lake beaches. Distance swimming is available parallel to shore at boat line.
