This park is at the center of the downtown area which is loaded with bars and restaurants. In the park there is a B-cycle rental stop, a slightly pricey but tasty Greek restaurant walk-up. An honorable mention is La Carafe across the street - one of the city's oldest bars - great atmosphere, good juke box -- drink selection is ok (atmosphere is the draw). One block away is Main St where there are LOTS of fun bars - Nightingale, Honeymooner, Moving sidewalk, Pastry war.... plus the Conservatory which has ramen and crepes too. - They often have fun outdoor events (concerts, movies, bingo...) check their online web calendar https://marketsquarepark.com/calendar/

The park was recently renovated and it is lovely! The Eastern Glades area has lots of soft grass, a pond, paths, and little shade structures - great for picnic, a stroll, or frisbee. There is a free pool, a 3 mile well used crushed granite running/walking loop around the main park, and mountain bike/trail running trails over by the baseball fields. We run the trails a lot - one of the few places you can do trail running in the city.

This is a walk up snow cone stand – but it is so much more! They have traditional LIQUADOS (like a smoothie with more sugar), AGUAS FRESCAS (fresh juice or blended fruit with water and sugar – sooo good, try the watermelon one); ELOTE is also delicious – corn with Mexican sprinkle cheese, hot sauce and mayo – it sounds a bit gross, but is delicious -- get it with everything!

There is one of these on Washington Ave (street with LOADS of restaurants and bars) that always has a line – the one close by is cheaper and doesn’t haves the massive line. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston! This is not tex-mex burritos, rather very well made Oxacan style food (amazing mole, osso buco, chicken baked in a banana leaf...). Consider an Uber if you are a fan of margaritas as we think the GOLD margarita is the best margarita in town (and we have done our research!) This is my second favorite Mexican place in town - it is much closer to the house than Picos too, and like Picos, the food is more traditional/upscale than typical Tex-mex. It is delicious - reasonable portions of mole enchiladas, fajitas, crispy tacos and posole. Price point is middle - 12-20$/plate. I am always satisfied and usually have leftovers. Margaritas are good, also strong - so you might want to uber. *small outdoor patio

This is Houston's oldest micro brewery (there now are a ton of great ones). They were a steadfast advocate when the laws against microbreweries in Houston were still terrible, and remain a big community supporter. This AWESOME spice store is across from Canino's market and next to El Bollio bakery. This is a just a cool place and it smells really good. I suggests getting some “Spice for Fruit” – it is a spicy powder that is amazing on mangos, apples, cucumbers, pomegranate seeds... In the back are some cool Mexican folk remedies for a long list of crazy maladies like being broke, bald, impotent, or jilted. It is just a fun place to spend 10 minutes after filling up on pastries at El Bollio.

This is a pretty cool market. It is an upgraded version of its former self - fortunately the upgrade was spearheaded by a local chef and they kept the same vendors while giving it a facelift It is a legit fruit and vegetable market – really neat. If you like mango and see a mango on a stick rolled in red powder stuff – get it!! These are delicious and slightly spicy as they are rolled in a special chili powder for fruit (you can get it at the great smelling Granel spice market across the street which also sells bizarre remedies for maladies like being broke, impotent or baldness in the back). Really amazing. The row of markets next door is more wares and spices – also pretty cool. El Bollio bakery (in this guide book) is across the street.

Honorable Mention - and i dont know where else to put it

This place is awesome if you love video games! This is a bar that on select Fridays opens up the video games it has on sale for all you can play. I think it is the first and last Friday - but I could be wrong, so double check that. For a flat fee you can play all the video games you want - mostly classic games and pinball with some newer ones. It gets busy the later it gets so go early. We had my 40th birthday here!

This is my preferred grocery. HEB is a Texas based grocery. They are well laid out, carry a great variety of basics and nicer stuff (good cheese, beer, wine...) plus have a good size section of ready made meals. I shop here.

This is the slightly less fancy, smaller, maybe cheaper, version of Whole foods. Good beer/wine selection and the usual organic produce, meats, and groovy personal care products

This is a solid basic grocery, and very close to the house. The chain is mostly in Hispanic neighborhoods so you can get good hot sauce and spicy snacks in addition to the basics.
