LoDo (lower downtown) and RiNo (Platte River North) were rail yards, stock yards and every type of dirty old industry an american city wanted early in the last century. Not any more! In the last 20 years this part of town has been completely transformed and is now a lively social hub with parks high rises and young people. Check out Union Station, walk the pedestrian bridge at the end of 16 over the rails and to confluence park where cherry creek meets the Platte river. Coors field is at the end of Weewata street and north of there is the RiNo district. Still in a state of flux with a mix of new construction and turn of the century warehouses. RiNo is a quite a bit more arty and bohemian than LoDo but with the pace of construction it may be totally different in 10 years.

Larimer Square is easy easy to get to on a bike, just off the cherry creek trail or its about a 30 minute walk. Restaurants and shopping on a historic block of old Denver. They really dress it up with lights and bling. The crowd is hip and a bit high brow but there are plenty of swanky dining establishments and nice indy boutiques. If you walk or bike, there is a little park with a fountain right on the cherry creek trail which makes it easy to identify your destination.

Its a pedestrian mall through downtown! There is a free bus that runs from civic center, next to the Capitol, to union station. Its 10 or 15 minute walk to the civic center station. Love it? Hate it? you choose. The mall is a bewildering mix of local spots big corporate restaurants and souvenir shops. Add to that business people, crazy people and tourists and you will begin to construct an image of the mall. You can walk a few blocks then ride a few on the bus to the end at union station. Take a breath have a refreshment then do it again back to civic center.

Warning you are now leaving Capitol Hill. There is a very different vibe in Cherry Creek, men wear watches that appear to be awkwardly heavy, women look salon fresh and I'm certainly the only one that is wearing something bought second hand. The scene is a bit top drawer and most of it seems brand new. The restaurants down here are good though. Try North for Itallian, Sol for you fancy mexican, Blue Harbor for the sea, Happa Sushi or Lil Ollies also for sushi and if you want to go down market Cherry Cricket or Milwaukee St Tavern. Also a great place to buy a couch or bedroom set at one of more than 10 fancy furniture places. If you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of some flashy sports cars going super slow ,driven by old guys with magnificent golf tans. Its like a different universe, just 10 minutes by bike or 35 on foot.

Its just on the other side of the Platte river from downtown. If you made it down to union station you may as well stop by. There are a few pedestrian bridges that connect down town to Highlands. Try the 16th st one, north of the falls bridge by REI, that will put you into the heart of highlands. Platte street is the main drag with nice shops and restaurants. There is a good icecream place, Little Man near by that draws quite a crowd.

Well what to say..?? Colfax is the longest main street in America. There is a spirit and vibration that would be hard to put into words for most. But here goes. A mixture of cultures and socioeconomic levels and business that seem to have not turned over in the last 50 years. It is the divider between Capitol hill and Uptown but is neither and it making its own fortune! Colfax check it out.

eating, drinking, living in the neighborhood

Welcome to Capitol Hill. These are the neighborhood spots. You can walk to most everything and i encourage you to do so. A few are better reached by bike or scooter cuz you need to get out of the neighborhood once in a while. Try em on for size, be a local for a couple of days.

Angelo's is a hoppin local place. They have reasonably priced wine, which they make in house and the muscles and oysters are great. It can be difficult to get a spot on weekends with the crowd that comes in.

great spot with a seasonal menu. Nice quiet bar good food and drink specials 7 days a week. There are plenty of other choices on this stretch of 17th if the menu doesn't strike your fancy. Just to be straight this is actually in the Uptown neighborhood and is more of a bike or scooter ride than a walk to but i included it because you can't spend your entire time in Capitol hill.

Ok your here for work. You don't want to sit upstairs by yourself. You can be with 20 other comrades staring at screens wearing ear muffs. WiFi? heck yeah we've got 4 of em and every one is faster than what you've got at home. Not for everyone, but if you have to do it, this is the place. Oh the coffee is quite fancy you know you will get a side of bubbly agua with that shade grown Guatemalan espresso.

All right you are from out of town, first time, i get it. This place is low on flash more for the locals. If you want a more bespoke experience try Lightshade on 6th. Whatever your flavor remember this is not like that time in college with your buddy "sponge". Colorado medical marijuana is super duper strong, go very very slowly. "its not working, im going to have one more" is the last thing said before a miserable evening.

You thought all of the piano bars had closed when Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr passed. Well today is your lucky day, Charlies is a trip to another time. More of a cocktail bar than a throw back some bruskis place, its vibe and its menu are forever 1967. Piano nightly at 6pm and heck yeah you sing along. Be brave and sit at the Piano and peel off some washingtons for the piano player while you break into your best falsetto for Danke Shoen or go super serious and sing My Way while delivering drop dead stares to the crowd of admiring onlookers.
