Beautiful place and more beautiful animals ... bears are wonderful ... if you are passing through definitely stop and visit. You can help the volunteers to make life easier for these wonderful animals. It is a way to drive, in the middle of the country side. But, worth a visit. These people, all volunteers, help these orphanaged brown bears live a decent life. There are some 800-1000 brown bears left in Croatia. None die a natural death. All human. And Croatia gives out licences to hunt up to 120 bears a year. More that 10% of the total bear population! This organisation needs our attention and our support. And it is lovely to see these gorgeous, peaceful bears.

The Gacka Beauty, 61 km long with its tributaries, springs unexpectedly quiet from below Godača and Venac hills in Sinac. Once out of the karst underground, it shows its liveliness and playfulness after fifty meters already. It rushes down in small cascades, forming a river stream or tributaries. It lazily meanders down the plain to Karlov kanal near Otočac. From this point on it merges with the Lika River. Although essentially a karst river, the Gacka is extremely slow and quiet with a uniform flow of water. Apart form the uniform abundance of its source, the Gacka is known for its stability and small temperature differences. The average annual water temperature is 9.4°C (7.9°C in winter, 10.8°C in summer), which is particularly suitable to the fish of the salmonid family. The Gacka water is rich in oxygen (9.1 to 13.5 mg/l), even to supersaturated conditions. It is slightly alkaline as well as fairly hard and rich in calcium salts. The flora and fauna of the Gacka River is very rich. The aquatic vegetations of mosses, algae and woody plants are lush due to favorable water temperature, good chemical composition and muddy bottom. From the fish species, the Gacka is renowned for its brown trout (Salmo trutta), truly a mecca for passionate anglers. Because of the abundance of food, the Gacka brown trout grows 5-7 times faster than in any other trout water in the world. Capital specimens of the Gacka's trout have been known to grow up to 5 kg. The angling season on the Gacka River opens 1 March and closes 31 October.

The old town of Drežnik is mentioned in the historic sources back in the 12th century. Its history has been marked by wars and its different rulers. The historic events in the area have mostly been marked by constant wars, which is also the reason that it did not develop as a trading place or a settlement but rather as a defence fortress. After 1830, the Austrian monarch sold the fortress to a private trader, who started demolishing the walls and selling stone as construction material. We believe that this very stone can nowadays be found in the foundations of numerous houses in the surroundings! The defence tower has been renovated and from there the visitors can enjoy in the view over the canyon of the Korana river and the surrounding mountains and learn something on the history of this always dynamic border region.

Velebit House is spread over four floors and covers a number of thematic ensembles intertwined and interspersed with each other so that the richness of Velebit, its diversity and cultural and natural value can be better displayed. The centre of the story are humans and their direct and indirect influence on nature and natural values. In the past, the inhabitants of Velebit lived a nomadic life; cutting the woods, tending livestock, building stone dwellings - shepherd’s shelters and dry-stone walls - and creating new habitats such as grasslands, ponds and the like and have influenced the variety of plant and animal species. In Velebit House you will meet a large part of this diversity - various insects and birds, large beasts, endemic plant species adapted to extreme living conditions... But the value of this mountain is not only in the number of plant, animal and fungal species, but also in the diversity if its landscape. The reason for this is the many superficial karstic forms - sinkholes, ridges, crags, limestone pavements... to name just a few. But the story of how they came to be is told in Velebit House! And what is actually most valuable is in the underworld and is inaccessible to most visitors. These are our deep caves inhabited by a whole unique world of specific fauna that have had to adapt to a life in a constant darkness. Once again, humanity is intrigued by the underworld, and has begun to explore the fascinating dark world which constantly surprises us by the newly discovered animal species.
