Every building on Pjaca has its story, each is a witness of history and the spirit of the city. As it was yesterday, it is also today, when Pjaca is filled with numerous bars, restaurants and shops, and when it became one of the most important spots for tourists wishing to enjoy in whatever it is that their hosts, citizens of Split, are enjoying.

Owing to its unique beauty and unusual acoustics, Peistyle became the ideal theatre scenery, perfect for opera classics and works of ancient literature, but also the stage where abundant urban life continues. Having your coffee on the steps circling Peristyle is a unique experience, one of the closest touches of a modern man with the ancient heritage, not only Roman, but also Egyptian, as the Peristyle is closely watched over by a 3500 old and perfectly preserved sphinx, the witness of Split's history in making. This is why John Paul the II in amazement said " Dear God, how many feet have stepped through here", and this is why citizens of Split think of Peristyle as the centre of Split and the entire world.

Believe it or not, but this square, maybe the most beautiful one in the city, to the citizens of Split is more familiar under its unofficial rather than its official name of Trg Braće Radić (Square of the Radić brothers). Its "familiar" name comes from the fact that it was once home to the bustling and colourful market where women from the surrounding villages came to sell their fruit. On the neighbouring square, west of the Fruit Square, fruit was sold. There are several landmarks decorating this not so large a square thriving with city life in bars, restaurants and exclusive shops, a venue often used also by fairs. The biggest is certainly the octagonal Venetian tower, the leftover of the former fortress, built in the 15th century for the defence of, at the time, a small town. Opposite the tower is a magnificent Palace of the old family Milesi from the 17th century with a spectacular Baroque facade, one of the best examples of that style in the whole of Dalmatia. Just in front of it stands the monument to the father of the Croatian literature, the citizen of Split, Marko Marulić, who was one of the most important philosophers and intellectuals of the 15th century. The author of the monument, as well as of several others in the city is Ivan Meštrović.

Marjan, the hill that overlooks the city has always been the most impressive part of Split imagery. Such a harmony betwwen natural and urban is rarely found; on one side the densely populated city in all of its glory and on the other a peninsula of almost pristine nature. Marjan offers to its visitors peace and tranquility, recreation and entertainment with natural pathways and trim-trails. Marjan is the place from which Split can be seen in all its glory, but you can also experience entirely different side of this densely populated and tourism oriented city.

Matejuška has been for centuries a port for small boats owned by fishermen of Split, the residents of Veli Varoš set sail from there out to the sea to feed their families. Even today there are dozens of boats tied up there, their nets drying , bait being prepared, with a monument dedicated to fishermen biding them farewell as they sail out to sea - a big fish hook.

The West Coast is a kind of a seaside continuation of the Riva, a promenade stretching 623 meters in length. Paved entirely with white stone from Brač, hosting luxurious yachts tied to its coastline and with cafes and restaurants along its entire length, it represents the new popular meeting point for the Split’s citizens and guests.

The national theater (abbreviated as “HNK”), is located in the city center on a square called Trg Gaje Bulata. The square’s namesake, Gajo Bulat, was a mayor of Split in the late 1900s. It was Bulat who declared the opening of this theater in Split on May 6, 1893. The national theater in Split has a very important role in the cultural life of Dalmatians. Every year, the theater organizes two opulent art festivals: Splitsko ljeto (Split summer festival) and Marulićeve dane (Days of Marulić). Interestingly, it is thanks to a tech event called Shift conference (and not theater performances) that has drawn many young people to the old theater building.

Beach

“We are going to Bačvice…", is tune often heard around the town, words of a joyous hymn to the municipal beach, officially designated as such in 1919. Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor, and it can accommodate over ten thousand people. During the low tides in springtime Bačvice turn into a split version of Copacabana where many famous soccer players first displayed their talent, where the rugby in Split was born, where even in wintertime a unique game of "picigin" is played (a sort of volleyball, played in the sea shallows with a small ball).
