Learn the real saga of America at the Santa Elena History Center. Founded in 1566, Santa Elena was the first European settlement in North America. Her fascinating but little known story is one of religion, geopolitics, cultural clashes, war and struggles to survive. The History Center is now open seven days a week and is housed in the newly renovated, federal courthouse in downtown Beaufort. Today, the Santa Elena site is a National Historic Landmark, important for its associations with the 16th-century conflict between Spain and France for control of the New World. Located on nearby Parris Island, the site is also considered archaeologically significant and tours of the site itself are available.

Founded in 1862, the Penn Center is the site of the first academic school for freed slaves. Today, it is one of the most significant African American historical and cultural institutions in existence and continues to be committed to the preservation of the Gullah Geechee culture. In addition to the museum, the site itself is available for tours year-round and is comprised of nineteen buildings related to and used by the Penn School, including Brick Church and Darrah Hall, one of the oldest buildings on St. Helena Island. It also hosts old burial grounds, Gantt Cottage (where Martin Luther King Jr. lodged), a Nature Trail, Chowan Creek and acres of pines, native flora and fauna.

A 5000 acre State Park. Hunting Island retains its colonial designation of the "Hunting Islands," which served as hunting preserves for Lowcountry planters and elite in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hunting Island light was constructed in the 1850s and soon thereafter destroyed by Confederate forces in the early days of the Civil War. Ten years after the Civil War ended the lighthouse was rebuilt, and later relocated to its current position. The 1893 Sea Islands hurricane swept Hunting Island and other nearby Sea Islands clean, but the lighthouse survived.

A must see, Old Sheldon Church was originally known as Prince William's Parish Church and was built in the Greek Revival style between 1745 and 1753. It was burned down by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. In 1826, it was rebuilt only to be burned again by General Sherman in February 1865. Today, these gorgeous ruins from a bygone era are found amongst majestic oaks and scattered ancient graves. Inside the ruins of the church is the burial site of Colonel William Bull, who, along with General Oglethorpe, was key in establishing the physical layout of Savannah, Georgia. It is now a popular site for wedding ceremonies, photographers, and ghost hunters. An annual worship service is held the second Sunday after Easter.

Ladies, if you love a man in uniform, prepare to be overwhelmed. And gentlemen, try not to be intimidated by all these Marines. Parris Island is something everyone needs to experience while in Beaufort. The legendary legacy of the United States Marine Corps, as well as the stimulating account of Port Royal’s past, is outlined at the Parris Island Museum. It features thousands of artifacts, images, and other materials that illustrate the history of Port Royal and Parris Island from the early Native American inhabitants to the modern Marines. The exhibits here focus primarily on the time-honored traditions of the Marine Corps and displays artifacts depicting Port Royal's important military role from the American Revolution to the Civil War. It also showcases the island’s Marine Corps installation after the Spanish-American War through the present. Alongside Marine Corps facts, there are exhibits devoted to the Charlesfort Santa Elena National Historic Landmark, site of the French and Spanish colonies on Parris Island between 1562 and 1587. If you’re looking for a reason to get outside and enjoy wildlife, Port Royal Cypress Wetlands is the place to do it. Easy to get to, there is parking along Paris Avenue which is basically the first road you come to when visiting Port Royal. Not far along the path, you will begin to hear the rookery before you see it and it is absolutely stunning! The snowy white egrets are the most obvious, but there are several species of birds that call this place home, at least part of the year, including herons, hawks, eagles, owls, falcons, geese, ducks, and other migratory waterfowl. It is a birdwatchers paradise. The cypress trees, Spanish moss, and budding flowers are beautiful too. In addition to the birds and fauna, you will alligators, turtles, and even a snake or two if you are lucky! You definitely don’t want to let your canine companion off the leash anywhere around here.
