The Cavendish is posh, but the Garden Room allows normal people in like me - they don't take bookings, but the food is good, affordable and you can see Chatsworth House in the background. If you can afford it, they will, of course, take bookings for their restaurant (I haven't been!)

It's a pub, but in our opinion well worth the 30 min drive from Bakewell - Tim will look after you - advisable to book but not essential - tell him Chris and Jo sent you and he'll probably throw you out!

The Famous "Plague Village" - perfectly safe now, the black death is no longer infectious.... however it is an interesting place to visit and there are some good coffee shops too.

Mam Tor is the highest point overlooking the Hope Valley - if you can stagger up the hill, you'll see glorious views, have a strenuous walk and deserve your coffee or pint in Castleton afterwards. Head for Mam Nick car park at S33 8WA.

Home of the Duke of Devonshire, but I don't know why I am telling you this as he doesn't promote us.... anyway, you probably know the rest - the house is slightly larger than Ashford House, but at least we don't have to pay his council tax! Seriously - a visit there is well worth the trip - house, gardens, garden centre and farm shop all worth a look.
