Arts & Culture

Considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, Diocletian’s palace is certainly the main attraction of the city of Split, Croatia. These ruins are some of the most valuable surviving buildings of the Roman era on the Adriatic coast. Emperor Diocletian, who voluntarily gave up the throne of the Roman Empire, in the turn of the 4th century CE built the palace and after his retirement on May1, 305 settled here, on the beach, in the Illyrian province of Rome.

Museum with an extensive collection of Latin inscriptions, predominantly originating from ancient Salona. In the early 16th century, Dominik Papalic, a nobleman and humanist from Split, set up in his house a collection of ancient inscriptions, which he found during the many walks with Marko Marulic, "the father of Croatian Literature", among the ruins of Salona. (On view in the Atrium of the Archaeological Museum are five original inscriptions that have been preserved from this collection). Marulic wrote the "catalogue", i.e. the "guide" to the collection.

Parks & Nature

Lovely place to escape the crowds for a couple of hours and breathe in the pine while watching the sun go down over Split. Beautiful hill and park just next to Split center/old town. Ideal to get some shade during the hot summer, run, hike and explore the various trails and the hermitages within the area. There a couple of view points too over the city. People running, walking the dog, riding a road bike and roller blading there. You cannot get lost as there are signs and maps along the way.
