Set in 100 acres of stunning, privately owned parkland, in the heart of the Peak District National Park, Thornbridge Hall is a must visit (especially for families with young children). There is a large nursery of plants that can be purchased, beautiful Quakers café overlooking the gardens and, for a small fee, you can walk around the gardens where there is plenty of activities for children to enjoy.

Bakewell is a picturesque market town that lies on the river Wye. It has an abundance of pretty streets filled with shops, cafes and restaurants and is well worth a visit - even if it’s just to go and try the famous Bakewell pudding (which I highly recommend serving warm with custard).

Haddon Hall is probably the finest example of a fortified medieval manor house in existence. Present-day Haddon Hall dates from the 12th Century to the early 17th Century, whereupon it lay dormant for over two hundred years from 1700 until the 1920s, when the 9th Duke and Duchess of Rutland restored the house and gardens, and once again made it habitable.

Perhaps best known as walking country, the Peak District National Park offers a spectacular variety of scenery and routes to be explored – from steep sided limestone dales to the dramatic high moorlands. There is something for everyone – individuals, families and groups – whether you want a challenging hike or a short stroll. Just a few recommendations close by are: Monsal Dale, Padley Gorge, MillersDale, Kinder Scout, Stanage Edge and Chatsworth. In the village, there is a large park with play equipment and picnic benches situated behind the houses on the opposite side of the road (cross the road, turn left then follow the pavement round to the park on the right). There is also the famous, medieval Sheepwash Bridge which has been named by national tourist board Visit England as the best location in the country to play the popular family pursuit of Poohsticks.
