Parks & Nature

Chiswick House is among the most glorious examples of 18th-century British architecture and makes a fascinating day out in West London. The third Earl of Burlington, who designed this noble Roman-style Palladian villa, drew inspiration from his Grand Tours of Italy. The Gardens - birthplace of the English Landscape Movement - are open following a major restoration which has revealed the original vistas and repaired the statues and garden buildings. There's also a fantastic café in a RIBA award-winning building that looks out on the gardens and house.

Shopping

Opened in 1979, The Old Cinema, London's only antique, vintage and retro department store, has a truly unique and varied history. This 10,000 sq ft Tardis of a store has real hidden depths. Starting life as a local picture house in 1908, it continued in that guise until 1934. It remained empty for two decades apart from a brief stint as parachute storage in World War II.

Drinks & Nightlife

Sitting next to the fire, or out on The Dove's riverside terrace, you are not just sitting in any old local – you are a part of London’s rich history. A public house has stood on this site since the seventeenth century. Throughout these years our sturdy bar has propped up some of the finest figures of English history. The poet James Thomson composed the familiar strains of ‘Rule Britannia’ here. Charles II romanced and dined his mistress Nell Gwynne here. And in the famous novel ‘The Water Gypsies’, author A P Herbert features it under a cheeky pseudonym; ‘The Pigeons’.
