Sidecar is a gem. Tucked on a side street of Rantzausgade, it looks like the most beautiful restaurant but works like café, with prices to match – great breakfast and lunch plates for cheap, and you can sit all day on the laptop. The perfect place to stumble to on an early morning.

The busiest restaurant on the block is not the grilled cheese bar, or the hip candlelit spot across the street, it's Ma'Ed, a delicious and affordable Ethiopian restaurant. If you don't know Ethiopian food, think one big pancake sort of thing, with a dozen different vegetable and meat stews in individual piles on top. Enjoy with your hands! Always a diverse crowd in age and background.

In the hotly contested race for best – and best cheap/late night – falafel and shawarma, we vote Take & Eat as the current champion. It's great. It's cheap. It ain't glamorous, but this is the true Copenhagener style.

Jægersborggade is Copenhagen's textbook example of gentrification: what was full of drug pushers in the early 2000s was settled by avant garde artists and, now, all of the most chic restaurants, design shops, and galleries. A must-stroll in Nørrebro.
