My Favourite Places

Here is a list of some of my favourite things to do in the area. From Canoeing on Lake William Hovel to Visiting the deer farm in Porepunkah there are so many wonderful experiences right here, right in front of us. No need to spend hours exhausting ourselves on long plane flights overseas, no need to learn another language, try and interpret indecipherable signs, bus/ train timetables, or stand in extremely long queues to have a far off view of something we have all seen on telly. Right here right in front of us we have some of the most beautiful landscapes available to planet earth.
Lake William Hovell is a magnificent lake located in the heart of the King Valley- vic high country. It is about a 1hr and 15 minute drive from Lotus Cottage, but it is a great panoramic drive which takes you past some great eateries and cafes, wineries, breweries etc. It can even take you past Brown Brothers Winery if you want - but careful you might get sidetracked, winery accommodation. In summer it is absolutely the best place to be. The King river flows all the way from the lake down towards Wangaratta and beyond, so the whole drive is embedded with lovely swimming holes, picnic spots, bushwalks, as well as the fine dining experiences etc. So something for everyone - waterfalls ( paradise falls) right near lake William Hovell, lookouts, a drive over the mountains to Mansfield is a famous one. 4WD tracks galore, cycle paths there is absolutely something for everyone. king valley airbnb, airbnb promotions.

The Red Stag Restaurant and deer farm ( 50 mins drive) is suited to families with children, couples and solo travellers alike. The speciality here is not the food, although that is fantastic, as well as some of the best customer service you will get anywhere. No it is the views and the animals which take centre stage. Magnificent sweeping views of the surrounding hills from all dining tables, some on a deck, the rest safely nested behind large glass windows ( on those colder days). There is also a sunny courtyard out the back which is closer to the animals, so you can watch the kids playing on the play equipment or feeding the animals while having a coffee or a wine. They have got it all sorted. For $5 you can buy a bucket and take the kids to feed deers, emu's, ostrich, goats, pigs, chooks, and even watching other children feed and interact with the animals is satisfying. If you have kids, this is a must - if no kids it is still an essential visit. airbnb homes. To get here you must drive through Myrtleford which is a traditional tobacco farming community, it has a large Italian community and as a result ( of all the Nonna's) is a haven for great food in particular Italian Cuisine. The deer farm is also right at the gateway to Bright, which is a popular tourist destination, which leads you up to the Mountains, ski slopes and resorts. airbnb bush retreats, airbnb reservation.

Rollasons Falls is a pristine swimming hole about 3/4 the way up Mt Buffalo. It is a beautiful walk down about 3/4 hr but on the way back it is going back up to the carpark, so it is an incline all the way 3/4- 1hr walk. On a hot day you need the pools again once you get back to the car park. But it is worth the journey with the reward of this great, refreshing ( the water is cold) swimming hole. There are no places to get food or drink once you leave Porepunkah so you will need to pack water, drinks, food and take your rubbish home with you. If you continue to the top of Mt Buffalo depending on what day and season you go there can be limited places to get food on top also. Dingo Dell has a café but you will need to look up exact opening times if you are relying on that for food. The best idea is to pack a picnic, and then you can discover the myriad of nature miracles that Mt Buffalo has to offer. In winter it is called the family mountain as it has softer more welcoming slopes for beginners and families. In summer the activities are even greater, there are underwater caves and crevices to explore, the Monolith is a great walk, so too is the horn, the absolute best place to be for sunrise or sunset. You will need walking boots, water, insect repellent, and all season jackets no matter what time of year you visit.

Beechworth is a must see if you are coming to Lotus Cottage, I assume it is one of the reasons for your booking. A larger historic gold mining town, with lots of history, a gorge, woolshed falls, lake samba ( where you can feed the ducks), plus a host of eateries, boutique art/craft and antique shops it is a delightful way to spend a day or an afternoon. Woolshed falls is essential, a great place to really unwind and just sit next to the falls, or rock hop to take some photos, particulary when there has been more than ample rain. The lolly shop is a must see, it brings back soo many childhood memories that you really haven't been to Beechworth unless you visit here. There are lovely ice cream, fish and chip shops besides all the bakeries, Chinese restaurant and pubs. The old gaol of course would be on many to do lists, and it has great food in the café.

I don't know where airbnb got this photo from but it makes it seem like the lake has dried up ??? Definitely not the case, Lake Mulwala is a haven for water sports especially in summer. Speed boat racing held there each year over New Years. Waterslides on both sides of bridge for kids, and a new adventure in water play park on Yarrawonga side just at start of bridge. Yarrawonga was always known as Victoria's Queensland, as it is flat, dry and hot especially in summer, so if it is a bit cool and you want to go somewhere a bit warmer, for sure Yarrawonga is a premium contender. Go to the Mulwala Ski Club not for the pokies, the Chinese or the Italian restaurant, the cold beer or the food, go for the view. Has the absolute best access and view of the lake. You can sit out in the beer garden and be virtually right at the waters edge, from here you can see pelicans, families sitting on picnic blankets next to the lake, jet ski riders, boats etc. Or if you want to be on the water there are variety of platoon boats you can actually hire, with BBQs on them, so you can go out and have a barbie on the water, but best to avoid this on windy days or if the water looks choppy. There are also a variety of boats which have lunch and avo tea cruises, to access go to the Yarrawonga side of the foreshore and you will see where all the boats are. Apart from this lots of lovely shops to look around in, cafes, etc the usual. Great place to really immerse yourself in water sports, fun and relaxation.
