They do the very best Vietnamese, Asian fusion cuisine- a "must eat at" every time we are in CT, a favourite of my children and us! Never miss a visit here when in CT. Booking is essential.

It is my favourite restaurant in the Cape- the most beautiful view of the mountains of Paarl and Stellenbosch and the best food around. A booking is essential usually a few months in advance if high season. Take the day to drive out to Stellenbosch, have lunch here and then visit the Rupert Museum with its amazing selection of SA art including the Pierneef station panels. At Jordan be sure to book a table on the terrace with a view.

Good spot for breakfast especially with hungry kids in tow. Nice views of the waterfront, excellent smoothies and all kinds of eggs.

Ok, so I am a foody and this is not a foody kind of place but I am a Capetonian at heart and grew up working in these restaurants as a teenager. And, hey, this is still the best burger around and great value for money especially on a Monday when they do a special on all burgers. The Spur at the Waterfront actually has one of the very best views of Table Mountain and the CT eye (big Wheel) so ask for an outside table (most people seem to want to sit inside which is a little strange for us) and enjoy the burger, inexpensive wine and beer and a great view. Excellent for hungry kiddies.

Drinks & Nightlife

It has the very best view in CT!! You have to make a booking well in advance but to sit up the top of the hotel and have a drink with CT at your feet is magical. A MUST DO while in CT. Go while the sun is still up and watch the sun set over the sea while sipping on excellent wine from Stellenbosch.

The Grace is one of the few hotels at the Waterfront that faces towards the mountain. The Bascule bar is a very popular spot for after work drinks with the CT crowd but if you get there early and nab a table it's a great spot for a sundowner. Best of all, good wine served CT style (250ml glass- for Americans or Canadians this is like 2 of our glasses!) with very good little nibbles. Try to get an umbrella as it gets very hot due to the west facing aspect of the bar. Best of all it is a five minute walk from our apartment - head to the canal and walk to the right through the big exit gate. You will see the hotel in front of you.

Essentials

Very large grocery store in the V and A. For all necessities at reasonable prices. Not as good produce as Woolworths, located in the same mall. More expensive but better (exceptional) quality. Woollies also has a very good little coffee shop for avocado toast and morning cappuccino.

Sightseeing

There really is nothing quite like having a swim with penguins! This little beach just past Simon's Town is world renowned and I have been visiting there since before I was born- literally in utero! Go early, be patient, wait for a parking spot and then pay your money and nab a spot on this small white sandy beach. If you walk over the rocks (or under them) on the left side of the beach you will get to a very small secondary beach which is only accessible if you are able to climb a bit. There the penguins will come right up to you and swim alongside you. It is all a quite wonderful experience. My kids have been enamoured with these little birds with "happy feet" forever.

Parks & Nature

What better place to be than at the top of Lion's Head to watch the sun rise across the Cape Flats! Leave home at 4am, be prepared to struggle to find parking, and then hoof it up to the top of LH, a hike and then a bit of a climb to get up to the top. there are chains to assist in the climb. This cannot be done if you have a problem with walking or pulling yourself up. The view from the top is truly astonishing- the 12 Apostles behind and the whole of CT in front of you. Don't miss this is you are fit enough to make the trek!

My sister Claire, who manages our apartment in CT would say to hike up Plattekloof Gorge but for those of us not fit enough or wanting a more leisurely ride to the top, take the cable car! Again, the views are magical and the ride up is very fun- try to get on the outside as you get in (first or last is always key). My best advice if you re in CT for a short period of time is to go up the cable car on the first non-windy day. Go early and do it fast. The queues can be horrendous and if you find the rest of your stay windy (or rainy- which you will hate but all Capetonians will be happy for the rain! ) you may miss this landmark. Don't be the tourist who leaves CT without getting up TM
