Food Scene

Shrimp and Grits are a Carolina tradition, and River Birch Lodge's are great. Also wonderful are the Very Berry Salmon salad (the salmon is grilled to perfection), steaks and burgers, and Sunday brunch. Staff is friendly and attentive.

Really fine Japanese food, and excellent sushi (all Deacs should have the Wake Forest roll).

Sightseeing

You can learn a lot just strolling the streets in this pre-Revolutionary War settlement, now part of Winston-Salem. The town square is where the nation's first public 4th of July celebration was held -- as a way to celebrate a return to peace. You can still see the hand tool marks on the wooden beams in many of the old buildings. And when you get tired of strolling, there are 2 bakeries -- one a sit down tea shop, and one with traditional Moravian breads, cookies, and cakes.

Parks & Nature

A great place to see large, soaring birds like hawks and eagles! Fantastic views of mountains and valleys. Drive up to the top, picnic and hike around -- it's all free! There are good restroom facilities at the info/ranger station at the base, and at the top, too. (This is the place Mayberry residents called "Mount Pilot." If you're hungry after your hike, drive a few minutes away to the real Mayberry, a.k.a. Mount Airy NC, for a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch and maybe a haircut at Floyd's!)

Arts & Culture

RJ Reynolds' wife Katherine didn't want a castle (see the Biltmore in Asheville NC for that), she wanted a home for her family, and she wanted a showplace for healthy agricultural methods. The home is lovely, comfortable and quirky (who wouldn't like a bowling alley and squash court in the basement?) and has the only Gilded Age-era pipe organ in a private-home that's still in operation (and it plays at 2:45 every day). There's a small but good museum of American art built onto the house. The extensive "village" that surrounds the house (dairy barn, servants' cottages, greenhouse, etc.) is home to good, casual local restaurants, shops & boutiques. Walking trails complete the picture --including a trail that connects to the Wake Forest campus (WFU now owns and operates the Reynolda complex). The house and museum are well worth the $14 admission; you can wander the grounds and village all day, picnic on the broad lawn, and explore the gardens, for free.
