Stay on your own in a truly private island on a beautiful atoll, with excellent swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and exploring - with all the comforts. Bird Island has been featured in many publications; it was the opening act in Airbnb's 'Like This, Live There' 2016 campaign. Bird Island is perfectly described by the reviews left by past Airbnb guests that have stayed on it already.

The central theme of Bird Island is a self-catering, Robinson Crusoe type of adventure, yet with all the comforts, where one could get to do their own thing in total privacy. We offer Bird Island at an exceptional price for an experience best suited for the adventurous who tend to be self-sufficient in nature.

It is a perfect setting for either a romantic get-away for a couple, a family gathering/reunion or for a small group of friends. The island also tends to have exceptional weather, always cool even even during summer months. Also, you will rarely see any of the notorious sand flies or mosquitoes in Bird Island found in the mainland, it was hand-filled with fine river sand to achieve that objective.

Want to get-away from it all, even for the shortest of time, with your love one or group of friends, then this is the place. Want to go swimming or snorkeling in crystal clear water in a beautiful unspoiled reef, you will be surrounded by one. Want to grab a fishing rod and cast to cruising feeding fish, the atoll around the island is considered one of the best for it.

Spending time at Bird Island, even for the shortest of time, you will feel like you have done something truly special.

Important Added Information.
(Note: The $595 price shown actually reflects the 2019 price, when next dates are available; and also when the many additions such as two new over-the-water cabanas and beach, which are already under way, will be completed.)

#1- The trip from Placencia Village to Bird Island is included in the booking price. Check-out time is at 10:00am, and pick up (check in) is at 1pm. We meet at the M&M Hardware boat dock/gas station (where Hockey Pockey is), which is in the back of its large parking lot (lagoon side). This dock is in the middle of town, close to everything, but it is different than the NEW main town dock at the very end of town. Pick up from the island should be roughly 2 hrs before a scheduled flight out of Placencia however.

#2-Availability: As you can see from the calendar, Bird Island is booked well in advance and many assume at first glance the calendar must be in error, it isn't. We do keep a waiting list however, though cancellations have been rare.

#3 -Length of Stay: From experience we have found a stay of 4-6 days is about perfect to stay in Bird Island. If you notice our calendar is now set in 4-day 'windows' (occasionally 5 days) and a blocked day in-between guests, which allows us to make our preparations for your stay a lot better and continually improve the island along the way. If you are interested in a longer stay than 4 days, we can extend any booking easily up 6 days by simply unblocking the day before and/or after any 4-day slot. Longer stays are possible upon request.

#4 -Extra Guests: If you are not sure how many extra guests there will be, you can always book 2 only, but change your reservation with Airbnb as you get closer to actual arrival.

#5- Sleeping accommodations: The island's main house has a master bedroom with a double bed. In addition there is also the original separate cabana available to stay in, with a double-size bed, Sirius radio, desk, etc, but without facilities. A new separate over-the-water, totally-self-contained cabana with bathroom, kitchen, etc is being finished this October 2017. The island then will accommodate up to 3 couples in three separate buildings totally self-contained.

#6- Exclusivity. Yes, when you book the island, you will have the whole Island all to yourselves, in ~total~ privacy.

#7 - Cancellation Policy. We are under and do follow Airbnb's Super Strict 60 policy.

#8- Wading slipper-type shoes. The island is surrounded by hard sand flats, further away by coral; bringing soft shoes that cover your toes and ankle are a good thing to have when walking about. There are many pairs in the island that may fit you, but no guarantee to do so.

#9- Snorkeling equipment: Bring your own or you can rent them locally on the way to the island. Yes, the island does have many sets however. For divers, a local outfit in town does rent tanks.

#10 - Side tours while staying in the island: We highly recommend visiting the main Belize Reef, while staying in Bird Island; for either snorkeling or diving. Many of our guests do this side trip. We can arrange this for you and can be done even after you arrive and staying in the island.

#11- Fishing equipment: The island is usually surrounded by constant marauding schools of fish (jacks, snappers, etc) feeding around it. Best to bring (or rent) your own equipment and a few small (1") silver spoons if fishing. If want to do bottom fishing, should get shrimp bait when food shopping.

#12- Food: Bird Island is a self-catering scenario so plan to bring enough meats, vegetable and drinks (and liquor) for your stay. The island however, does have a very well-stocked kitchen with a myriad of condiments such as cake mixes, flour, rice, spices, oils, paper towels, garbage bags, etc., so you are not required to think of every little thing. Close by where we take off for the island in Placencia, there are excellent food stores and vegetable stands. Food shopping is a very simple step and can be left for last moment.

#13- Refrigeration: The island has a new propane refrigerator with a fair-size freezer. It has ice trays. Bringing at least one bag of ice is never a bad idea.

#14- Water: The island has a well-filtered rain-water system, for all uses including cooking and even drinking water. Nonetheless, we still provide purified drinking water for drinking; meaning no need to worry about drinking water.

#15- Communication. A local phone is at the island so you can call local numbers, or us, at any time. The island has very good and reliable WiFi.

#16- Power. Solar-powered and has a wind generator; so no noisy generator.

#17- Boating. Two single-person kayaks, knee boards and inner tubes to cruise the atoll that surrounds it. A new 2-person super canoe will be added in Novemb(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)- Sun Tan Lotion and Bug Spray. Remember, it is the tropics; the best type of suntan lotion is one of a high Block Factor, either lotion or spray type. As to bugs (i.e. sandflies), Bird Island just doesn't tend to have them, but on extremely-calm, still days they may come from other nearby islands.

#19- Places to stay in mainland: We suggest Cozy Corner or the fancier Nirvana hotel, both are the closest from where we take off. Sea Spray, Ranguana Lodge are also good choices. All four are right on the Placencia beach.

#20- General weather pattern:
January-June 15th: is considered the 'dry season'.
June 15th-July 15th: the first seasonal rains tend to occur.
July 1st-September 15th: usually very nice weather, interrupted by the occasional 30-minute passing thunderstorm.
September 15th-October 15th: the second seasonal rains tend to occur.
October 15th-December 30th daily scattered thunderstorms here and there but great weather in between them.
(Please note that weather in Belize tends to be pleasant, specially at Bird Island is a bit in a rain shadow and inside an atoll, so its surrounding waters stay clear even when unusually windy. Weather however we could never guarantee; the above is a rough guide only).

#21- Getting to Placencia from Belize City:
By Air: (Maya or Tropic Air) $235 USD round trip per person / 40 minute flight. Fastest way.
By Car: Rental Car; roughly 3.5 hour drive. Cost could range between $50 - $125 USD a day.
By Taxi: About $150 USD each way, up to 4 people, or more.
By Shuttle: Start at roughly $75 USD each way per person; 5 runs a day. Nice, relaxing scenic drive but long.

Last Note: Bird Island is always undergoing improvements each year. Last year (2016) we added new decks, a fishing dock and the new observatory overlooking the atoll, which guests simple have loved. This year (2017) we did the new walkways and now finishing a new 2nd over-the-water, totally self-contained cabana (16x16) which will be ready October 2017. During 2018 we will be adding many more additions and improvements, such as another self-contained cabana and even creating a true beach.

Great getaway place for quiet self reflecting time. I would love to come back here in a few years to see how the place have evolved. Or not. Much thanks to Fred for creating such a sanctuary for a group like mine who needed a quiet get away from our hectic everyday lives. Belize, Placencia, and Bird Island, with all they had to offer, are forever etched on our minds.

Respuesta de Fred:
Developing such an island from scratch has been indeed an evolution; but it is what has made the journey so much fun (and challenging). We really do look forward to your return.

Wow! What a great experience. We had one small problem with the fridge, but Fred was out to the island within an hour to correct it. Dont hesitate to book, it is worth it in every way. We took the kayaks out the first day to explore the reef and find the best spots for snorkeling. Get out early to take advantage of the calm morning water. Fishing around sunset is incredible. Pick up some frozen shrimp for bait. Go out at night and collect a dozen sea urchins and enjoy the freshest Uni you might ever have. We did bring a mosquito net for over the bed. It was useful for the times when the wind wasnt cooperating in the very early morning hours. An unforgettable opportunity that truly cant be duplicated.

Respuesta de Fred:
Brian, one learns something every day, I finally tried those sea urchins, and here we thought they were totally useless. After stellar dry weather this whole summer, this October has turned out to be the wettest weather indeed with dead still nights to boot, so your mosquito net idea was indeed a cool idea; I just brought some very fancy ones from China per your example. Safe travels you two!

After reading dozens of AirBnB reviews and a few travel magazine articles, we knew we could expect to have an amazing time on Bird Island. What we couldn't have known is how transformative our stay would be. It's truly the sort of thing you have to experience to understand. It's an island in the middle of the sea, surrounded by a beautiful coral reef t even talked about the sea life! What an amazing experience. You must go!

Respuesta de Fred:
Jerroid, it is us (and the island) that is most grateful for your visit, for we all felt the bright sunshine and good karma that you walk with.

We read every single review just to get the in's and out's of the island. This was our Honeymoon and well as me turning 30 while we were there! What better way to do both! Jamie and I loved everything about the island (minus the storm, which Fred came out the next day to calm my nerves.) We snorkeled and kayaked every day. Please make sure to kayak over to visit Jeff on Frigate Caye. We were treated to a fishing trip with Fred and Conroy on our last day there! It was a highlight of our trip! This island is not for the faint of heart, sure you have a phone and wifi but you also need to be prepared. Both with food and also understanding the weather has a mind of it's own. As everyone else has said, don't wait, just book it! We look forward to what is to come with the island and also making it back out there one day. If you get a chance to visit the village I recommend (if open at the time): Cozy Corner for Fried Chicken and Burritos. Above Ground for coffee and atmosphere. Carmen's for chicken burrito and tostadas. Rick's Cafe. Wendy's for fryjacks. Enjoy your time! Thank you Fred, Ruth and Conroy for making this a trip of a lifetime.

Respuesta de Fred:
Lynn, actually that fishing excursion was a bit of an experiment, so was fun to see how much you two appreciated it; in the future we will use the new big boat, since it is ten times more fun. Needless to say, a pleasure having you two stay with us and until you come back and see all the cool changes, save journeys.

If you are fortunate enough to be able to visit Bird Island then you will know absolute peace and quiet and tranquility and perfect beauty. This island getaway is so phenomenal we try to come every year. It gets better and better because Fred and Ruth are constantly updating and creating more space and trying to top themselves. The only thing you need is some food and a desire to enjoy time with whoever you came with and a few birds and a lot of sea life. There is internet and a tv but we don't spend a lot of time using it except to look up our catch of the day. We can't wait to come back.

Belize, it's citizens, Bird Island, and Fred are amazing. I just returned from Bird Island knowing that my wife and I will be thinking about our visit for a very long time. Bird Island is in high demand for good reason and our trip was certainly worth the 18 months we waited, between booking and going. Fred was a pleasure to chat with and he clearly puts a lot of hard work into constantly improving his slice of paradise. Weather and wildlife were quite exciting with thunderstorms and critters keeping us plenty busy. The island and it's setting are spectacularly beautiful. We paddled and snorkeled our way around a couple nearby islands. In the reef surrounding bird island we saw plenty of the many common reef fish, a spotted eagle ray cruised around the island a couple different days, a nurse shark, several small yellow sting rays, and lobster. Pelicans were constantly diving for food, frigates soaring, hermit crabs and various other crabs were everywhere and frequently had to be relocated from inside the living quarters. Fred built a pond that was being used, naturally, as a fish nursery; we saw many juvenile fish and even an octopus. Fred recommend Go Sea for diving so I booked a day with them while my wife snorkeled in the same group. They were awesome! Very friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The boat was great, prices fair, what we saw on our trip was pretty hard to comprehend. I saw my first whale shark, way out of season, and if I hadn't heard the dive master screaming underwater I would have thought I was hallucinating. Goliath grouper, nurse sharks (swimming around instead of sitting still at the bottom), huge turtle, tons of beautiful coral and fish. Fred's description of Bird Island is very thorough and accurate. It's important to know that the experience is nothing like being at a beach resort. Bird Island is quite isolated and resources most take for granted are a precious commodity out there. Water, power, the internet, even food all depend greatly on thoughtful planning. It didn't take long for us to get used to it and it never had a negative impact on our visit in any way, it was actually quite the opposite. It was nice knowing that we were part of something that has a much lighter footprint than the typical resorts and tourists which are damaging coral and fish stocks. We feel like we won the lottery, being able to visit Bird Island. The publicity it has received is well deserved. Our visit, shockingly, at every turn, despite seeming impossible to do so, got undeniably more spectacular. Be sure to enjoy the wonderful rum and beer in moderation, wouldn't want to forget a second of your visit.

Respuesta de Fred:
Greg, make sure to buy a lottery ticket, because you are indeed batting 100%; a whale shark, in August, amazing. You told me you arrived with high expectations, I trust we at least matched them. Really a pleasure having you two, and your post reminds of what many guests have oftentimes referred to as the 'Bird Island Experience'.
