Qué harás

The Dogs of Chernobyl program treats the descendants of dogs that were abandoned after the 1986 nuclear disaster. These animals face hard lives in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, constantly fighting for basic necessities like food, water, and shelter during the harsh Ukrainian winters.

During your virtual visit we will meet and feed some of the abandoned dogs who live at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. You will learn about our mission and history treating these incredible animals. After meeting some of the dogs, we will visit the scene of the disaster at the Unit 4 reactor.

Your interactive virtual visit allows you to see an environment where people have been prevented from living for over three decades. We will be spending most of our time with the beautiful four-legged friends that roam the power plant and providing them with food. Feel free to bring your curiosity and questions. You will learn about the history of the region, the nuclear power plant, and the work that is currently happening at Chernobyl.

My name is Lucas Hixson, and I along with my co-founder Erik Kambarian, first came to Chernobyl over 5 years ago. My background is as a radiation specialist and before coming to Chernobyl, I monitored environmental contamination in the United States.

In 2016, Erik and I founded Clean Futures Fund, a U.S. non-profit organization that supports the workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and affected communities. In 2017, Erik and I started the Dogs of Chernobyl program, in the last 3 years we have vaccinated and sterilized over 1,500 animals. In 2018 we received permission from the Ukrainian government to begin rescuing and adopting puppies from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone to forever homes in the United States and Canada. To date we have adopted over 40 puppies.

This was absolutely amazing. Lucas is so eloquent, and as an on-site scientist can answer all radiation and contamination questions without missing a beat. We saw dozens of dogs and even puppies!!! All with a personal story. Highly recommend.

This is a great experience. We get to know a lot about the current situation in Chernobyl and how the effects of the explosion all those years ago is still permeating society. Ohh, awesomely cute dogs!

Lucas was a wonderful host. He is an excellent storyteller and has a very well crafted structure for the program. We got to ride along with him to various locations to meet groups of dogs and see buildings and workers in the protected zone. He is extremely knowledgable about the history of Chernobyl and the impact of the disaster there. He weaves this information into the visits with the dogs--its very clever and impactful. I did this experience with my mother and aunt who joined from their homes. We all loved it. I highly recommend this unique experience.

I loved this experience so much, I did it twice! If you either love dogs, are interested in seeing some very cool areas of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, want to learn more about the Chernobyl accident and the implications of the radiation remaining in the atmosphere in this area, or you deeply care about the important things in life, this experience is for you. In other words, it’s probably for you, no matter who you are. Lucas is engaging, knowledgable, and passionate about helping others (both dogs and humans!). Your money also goes toward a wonderful cause. It’s a very interesting hour well spent.

This is a must see Air BnB virtual tour!!! It was exciting to be transplanted to this industrial accident site and witness all the good work of Lucas and his organization. Every dog has a name and Lucas knows them all!! I loved this tour. And I loved learning of Lucas' work there.

This was a very special and moving experience! It was amazing to meet the wonderful dogs! You see it all happening live on the Zoom call. Lucas is a great host who explains a lot about the dogs, but also about the disaster at Chernobyl and its affect on the people of the area. This truly is a unique experience that I highly recommend!!!
